The Cougars capitalized on a pair of critical Turlock mistakes to add another score before the half. First, the Bulldogs were flagged for a 15-yard personal foul penalty for a late hit on the kickoff return, setting Golden Valley up at the Turlock 49. Then, after Herchenbach connected with McMillan for an 18-yard gain to the Bulldog 15, Turlock was once again flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving the ball to the 8. Two plays later, Herchenbach found Kurt McMillin in the right corner of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown with just 12 seconds left in the half. Arnsberg’s PAT kick made it 14-6.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half. After taking over on their own 17, five running plays moved the ball out to the 40. From there, Ramall Reed finished the job, going the final 60 yards on a sweep around the right end for the touchdown. Reed found a seam in the Cougar defense, cut the ball back up the middle and sprinted in untouched. The two-point conversion pass was batted away by Cougar defensive back Nigel Grayson, leaving the score at 14-12.

From there, the Golden Valley defense put up its best “bend but don’t break” imitation, with Harris and Earl Richards recovering fumbles in addition to the fumble recovery by Ochoa and Harris’ interception.

Golden Valley held a slight advantage in total yards, gaining 267 to Turlock’s 258, but had 64 total offensive plays compared to just 43 for Turlock. Roland gained 82 yards on 17 carries, including a touchdown, while McGhee, slowed down by his injuries, was limited to a season-low 71 yards on 22 carries. Herchenbach completed 10 of 14 passes for 97 yards and two scores.

Carlos Palafox led Turlock with 124 yards on 21 carries, while Martin completed four of eight passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.
